It all began when my neighbor’s house blew up.

I was young, but old enough to understand that buildings were more than walls, roofs, and windows. They were safety, memory, family, identity, the frame around everyday life.

That moment stayed with me. It became the first page of a much larger story.

I was eight years old.

Pieces of his wooden house landed in my grandmother’s yard. While the adults saw debris, cleanup, and a very stressful neighborhood situation, I saw inventory.

There were boards. There was open space. There was a sheet nearby.

Naturally, I became a developer.

I gathered the wood, claimed a corner of the yard, leaned boards where they seemed to belong, threw a sheet over the top, and sketched the whole thing with the confidence of someone who had absolutely no idea what she was doing.

My neighbor survived, thankfully. His house did not.

Long before I knew the language of plans, sections, elevations, or structure, I was already doing the thing. I was studying what was available, imagining what it could become, drawing badly, building anyway, and calling the final result intentional.

That little playhouse was my first project. It had no permit, no budget, no consultant team, and almost certainly no structural logic. But it had a concept, personality, and a roof, technically. It also had the thing I still chase in every project: turning fragments into possibility.
