It all began when my neighbor’s house blew up.

I was eight when pieces of his wooden house rained down into my grandmother’s yard. The adults saw debris. They saw cleanup. They saw a very stressful neighborhood situation. I saw inventory.

There were boards. There was open space. There was a sheet nearby.

Naturally, I became a developer.

I gathered the wood and claimed a corner of the yard. I leaned boards where they seemed to belong, threw a sheet over the top, and sketched the whole thing with the confidence of someone who had absolutely no idea what she was doing.

My neighbor survived, thankfully. His house did not.

That little playhouse was my first project. No permit, no budget, no consultant team, and almost certainly no structural logic. But it had a concept. It had personality. It had, technically, a roof. And it had the thing I still chase in every project: turning fragments into possibility.

Because even then I knew that buildings were more than walls, roofs, and windows. They were safety, memory, family, identity, the quiet frame around everyday life. That afternoon in the yard became the first page of a much larger story.
